Back to School
It’s that time of year again and school doors are officially open! On the first day of school it is common for young children to be upset or cry when their parents leave. This is due to separation anxiety in combination with a new environment. This may be the child’s first time leaving home without their parents in close proximity. To reduce your child’s anxiety, parents can prepare their children in many ways. For example, visiting the school with your child beforehand, meeting the teacher, and walking around the classroom are all helpful to get your child comfortable, and familiarize themselves with their new environment. More importantly, parents need to prepare themselves too.
Parents should understand that their child is safe and happy in this new environment. They don’t need to worry about their child. While they can stay a few more minutes at the school before they leave, they do not need to panic if their child keeps crying aloud. Children can often sense their parents’ feelings; if parents stay calm, their children will follow suit.
These are a few of the tips that Elaine Lam, a child psychologist, offers to parents. Elaine is one of the many expert speakers participating at Parenting Expo 2017 this October. Elaine will coach parents how to effectively communicate with toddlers and preschoolers. A very common situation is when a child whines or throws a tantrum. Parents always feel embarrassed when their child whines or throws a tantrum in public settings such as supermarkets or shopping malls because their child wants something that they don’t want to buy for them. “Don’t get angry with your child in these circumstances, there are ways to calm down your child without giving in to their request,” said Ms. Lam.
Elaine will be sharing effective communication techniques with parents at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 21. To get tickets to the Parenting Expo, please visit our website: www.ParentingExpo.ca
